Learning Support
There are a range of community activities in the Learning Support Department. This department supports learners across the school community. Support is offered inside lessons and during registration and lunch-times.
In Class Support
This involves supporting younger learners in the classroom for one or two hours each week. You can use your experience at school to advise and help younger students in the classroom.
You will be placed in subjects where you feel confident that you can offer meaningful help.
You will receive training and your in class support will be monitored and evaluated by members of the Learning Support Department.
Homework Club
This is a lunch time club in C06 (The Learning Support Base) which we will run for threes days a week. Three or four sixth formers spend lunch times (one hour) helping younger students to complete their homework. You will be expected to commit yourself to at least one day each week negotiated with Ms Toynbee. You may bring your lunch with you.
Group Play Reading
This involves reading short plays with small groups for two morning registrations with the support of two teaching assistants.
You will receive training and feedback.
6th Form Mentors
This is a new scheme being piloted in September 2009. 'Swans' or 6th Form Mentors will support vulnerable Year 7 pupils who they may visit in their Primary Schools before they start at Huntington.
The 'Swans' will run a drop-in Clinic in the Library at lunchtimes and visit their 'ducklings' at least one day each week during registration.
The idea is to act as a supportive older brother or sister. This can be combined with any of the other Learning Support Activities.
